IL Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi
Trovatore takes place in the Middle Ages and tells the story of a Count seeking revenge for the loss of his brother who was killed as a baby by the traveller Azucena. Manrico, raised by Azucena, is the mortal enemy of the Count, yet both have fallen in love with Leonora. From a purely vocal standpoint, the opera is considered by many to be Verdi’s best bel-canto opera. The singing is extravagant and challenging. It features the famous Anvil chorus, Azucena’s “Condotta” and Manrico’s soaring “Di quella pira.”

CARMEN
by Georges Bizet

Carmen is one of the most famous operas of all time. The opera tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve officer, who is seduced by the fiery Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and becomes a criminal, yet loses Carmen’s love to the famous Escamillo. The opera created a scandal when first performed because of its immorality, lawlessness, and violence. It is well known for its arias “Habanera,” “Seguidilla,” and the famous “Toreador song.”

Two Rare Oratorios:

Requiem
by Camille Saint-Saëns

Stabat Mater
by Francis Poulenc

Taconic Opera presents two of the most beautiful oratorios ever written but rarely performed. First, the opera chorus, soloists, and orchestra of the Taconic Opera will perform the Requiem of Saint-Saëns. Listeners familiar with his Christmas Oratorio will be excited to hear this beautiful work. In the same program, the company will present Poulenc’s gorgeous Stabat Mater. While Poulenc’s Gloria is more famous, the Stabat Mater, with sumptuous soprano solos, is perhaps the greatest choral work written by this composer. Together, these two liturgical oratorios should create an unforgettable afternoon. TWO PERFORMANCES!
